Unrest in Plateau State: Resident Recounts Terrifying Ordeal as Neighbours Burn House

Manji Le’an, a survivor of the recent attacks in Mangu town, Plateau State, revealed that his neighbours celebrated as they set his uncle's house ablaze.

In December 2023, armed men targeted Manji Le’an's Dungwel community, prompting him to seek refuge with his uncle in Mangu town. Despite his house in Dungwel remaining unscathed, Le’an expressed exhaustion from the ongoing threats in the community, necessitating the move to a safer location.

The recent conflict in Mangu Local Government Area added to his distress, causing a spike in blood pressure. Le’an, along with his uncle, narrowly escaped harm as neighbours set their new residence near EKAN Primary School ablaze.

Le’an shared, "I left Dungwel on December 13 last year, seeking peace at my uncle's house near EKAN Primary School in Mangu town. However, we've relocated to Angwan Mission due to our Muslim neighbours burning down my uncle's house, rejoicing at our misfortune."

The origin of the conflict traces back to Fulani herders attacking Mwaghavul youths near Sabon Gari. Tensions escalated as Muslim settlers in Sabon Kaswa targeted Mwaghavul neighbours, leading to house burnings and the destruction of the COCIN Church. The violence reached Le’an's area around EKAN Primary School, with Muslim neighbours joining in the burning of houses.

Terrified by the unfolding events, Le’an and his uncle locked themselves in their house, initially unaware of the threat they faced from their neighbours. The situation highlights the escalating tensions and violence plaguing communities in Plateau State.
